Joe Steier is a dynamic healthcare entrepreneur and business leader who has helped found many startup companies, owned various small businesses and continues to provide advisory services to various profit and non-profit boards while becoming an author, public speaker and a respected healthcare expert.
During two decades of healthcare leadership, he has founded Professional Healthcare Services, a specialized strategic planning and reimbursement consulting firm, and helped build Home Quality Management (HQM) from a small, family-owned nursing home chain to a top 20 regional chain focused on quality of life. Mr. Steier was President and Chief Operating Officer until HQM was sold, in 2007, and has since served as a co-founder, President and CEO of Signature HealthCARE.
Signature is built on three organizational pillars: Spirituality, Learning, and Intra-preneurship. The company has grown into an innovative post-acute healthcare provider with 118 skilled-nursing centers, and a non-medical home care business, that has earned many national awards and accolades. Signature has advanced the growth of various other innovative affiliate companies and organizations, including SHC Medical Partners, a medical extender platform; YourDoc2U, an award winning telemedicine startup; Interactive Health Network; a healthcare software company; Signature Advantage, a startup ISnP plan; Signature Rehab, a full-service rehab organization with over 1,000 therapists; IDB, a design and construction firm; Signature Lifestyles, a boutique, ground-up assisted living brand; Serenity, specialized care for dementia patients; InnovateLTC, a business accelerator serving the aging population; Silver Angels, MCD waiver based homecare; Signature HomeNow, a regional acquisition; and more, growing out of the Innovation pillar.
The company has over 17,000 employees – referred to as ‘stakeholders’ – and has been recognized with various ‘Best Places to Work’ honors, including Modern Healthcare. The company also continues to advance clinical programming with over 100 locations earning Quality Assurance Performance & Performance Improvement Accreditation from Providigm in 2017. Kentucky Medical News’ Medistar awarded its Bluegrass Navigators Award to Signature HealthCARE in 2017 for innovation in serving the aging population Inc. 5000 recognized Signature HealthCARE most recently on its 2017 list of fastest growing private companies. Indepedent analysts certified Signature HealthCARE as a Great Place to Work in 2018.
Mr. Steier’s academic accomplishments include earning his CPA with PricewaterhouseCoopers and earning a specialized MBA in Healthcare Administration from the University of Miami, where he received the Order of Merit and currently serves as a healthcare sector Board Member. He also holds Master’s in Education and Doctorate in Organizational Learning degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, where his dissertation on ‘Leaders as Teachers’ earned academic distinction, and he became a Wharton Fellow.
Mr. Steier received a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Bellarmine University, where he was a scholarship athlete, has been inducted into the Distinguished Gallery Of Alumni and served on the University’s Board of Overseers for over 8 years.
He also serves on the following civic boards: Greater Louisville Inc Board of Directors, Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, University of Louisville Advisory Board, University of Louisville School of Public Health Board (Current Chair), Sacred Heart Board of Trustees, Thrive Center Board (Current Chair), and the Louisville CEO Council Board. Mr. Steier serves as Chairmen of Bearno’s Pizza inc., Steier Properties, and NBA2LOU, a civic business movement to bring the NBA to Louisville.
In addition, Mr. Steier served in the Bellarmine University President’s Society, the University of Miami Hurricane Club and several other groups. He was named one of the city’s top ‘40 Under 40’ professionals and a ‘Healthcare Leader of the Year,’ both by Business First of Louisville. He also received Community Health Charities of Kentucky’s ‘Champions in Health Leadership Award,’ and was named one of the ‘50 Most Influential Louisvillians’ by Louisville Magazine. He was named to the Kentucky Entrepreneur Hall of Fame in 2017.
